Superior Results and Less Downtime: VASER Liposuction
VASER® Liposuction is the most advanced form of liposuction. Our VASER® liposuction offers patients a faster recovery, less downtime and smoother results, and is performed in a safe environment. Superior to traditional liposuction, the process allows for specific areas to be targeted and handled more efficiently, leading to a more sculpted, smoother result. VASER® Liposuction in Portland is administered under local anesthetic without the inherent risks of general anesthetic. This minimally invasive liposuction procedure is ideal for working men and women, and for people with busy families, as the downtime is far less, and moderate activities may resume within a short period of time after the procedure.
How VASER® Liposuction Works
VASER® Liposuction uses small micro-cannulas along with ultrasound frequencies to remove fat from stubborn areas. The ultrasound waves gently and selectively dislodge fat cells away from the body’s soft tissue so that our liposuction physicians can remove those fat cells out of the body without severe bruising, bleeding and swelling – which could occur frequently with more traditional liposuction techniques.
Traditional liposuction uses larger, cannulas that do not have the ability to target areas as successfully. This older mechanical method has a greater impact upon blood vessels and nerves that can be avoided with this more modern version. Additionally, VASER® Liposuction enables natural fat transfer for any additional body sculpting techniques, as the fat cells that have been removed are not damaged or destroyed during the removal process. Our physicians can harvest and shift viable fat cells to the buttocks or other areas of the body to increase volume. Areas where fat transfer is most commonly transferred to are the breasts, buttocks, face and backs of hands. This transfer process results in a very natural increase in volume which offers a supple, full, more youthful appearance.
VASER® a superior alternative to traditional liposuction, and offers many advantages to the patient:
- Minimal downtime
- Fast recovery
- Less invasive
- Safer
- Smoother results
- Enables fat transfer

VASER® Liposuction is the perfect fat removal procedure for people who have busy, active lifestyles. Recovery time varies from patient to patient, depending on several factors such as the number and size of the areas treated, as well as overall health. In general, most of our patients are able to return to work after just a few days. In fact, most of our liposuction patients prefer to schedule their procedures on Fridays and Saturdays, and are able to return to work on Monday. When Exercise and Dieting Are Not Enough
Many of our liposuction patients are committed to a healthy lifestyle, and consistently exercise as well as eating a healthy diet. Some fat deposits are very difficult to resolve, particularly on the thighs, bottom and lower abdomen. For a smoother, more defined profile, VASER® liposuction can target and get rid of those stubborn fat deposits that just won’t go away, no matter how hard you work. Our goal is to give you real answers about what the procedure can do, and to respond to any of your questions and concerns. Patient safety is our primary concern at Athenix, and every procedure is performed under the most stringent safety protocols.
Liposuction History
Liposuction is one of the most common of all cosmetic surgeries, developed in the mid-70’s, and became a popular procedure in the 80’s. In 2001, VASER® LipoSelection was approved by the FDA much later, after advances in technology found new ways to target fatty deposits. Ultrasonic energy allows our board-certified plastic surgeons at Athenix to specifically reach the most difficult areas. The ultrasonic technology actually “shakes” apart fat cells from the surrounding tissue. This advanced form of liposuction is known to lead to better skin contraction and tightening. At Athenix, we focus on providing our patients with the most advanced procedures for body sculpting through liposuction and a range of other procedures.
Your Recovery from Liposuction
Although the procedure is less invasive, you should expect some degree of bruising, swelling and pain, following your liposuction. The pain is easily managed with the prescription pain medication our physician will prescribe. Every person is different, but typically, within a day, our patients are up and walking around. It is important that you avoid strenuous activities for several weeks so that the areas treated can heal properly. You will be given full instructions, but it is important that you have someone to assist you on the first day.
Selective Fat Removal for a Smoother, More Defined Profile
The VASER® system allows our physician to be far more selective in the ability to target unwanted fat deposits. The process is far less disruptive to the body, as it targets only the fat cells, leaving blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue in place, with far less physical trauma for the patient. The ability to select the fat cells to be removed, particularly from denser body areas on the back or abdomen, makes this advanced liposuction technique superior to older, traditional methods – with a smoother result. In fact, many patients who have had traditional liposuction and want to resolve previously suctioned areas that were left uneven, can get very successful results with this treatment.
This liposuction process is not painful, and involves the use of a special ultrasound and massage, typically feeling warm and soothing for the patient. A treatment generally takes about an hour to complete, depending upon the number of areas being treated. VASER® liposuction is versatile, and can be applied to many of the problem body areas to sculpt and trim a slimmer, more defined contour:
- Back
- Arms
- Hips
- Buttocks
- Thighs
- Knees
- Tummy

Liposuction – FAQ
What are the advantages of Vaser® liposuction?
Vaser liposuction has a faster recovery, less downtime, requires only local anesthesia and is minimally invasive. It is also considered to be safer than traditional liposuction, and to produce smoother results.
Can Vaser liposuction customize fat removal for my body?
Yes, the system allows your physician to be much more selective in targeting fat deposits.
Does the Vaser system come with added risks?
The Vaser system is considered safer than traditional liposuction as it only targets fat cells and doesn’t disrupt blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue. As a result, there is far less trauma and recovery may be significantly shorter.
When should I consider liposuction?
Liposuction helps resolve stubborn fat that resists diet and exercise. If you are maintaining a stable weight and leading a healthy lifestyle, but need better contouring due to resistive fat deposits, you may be a good candidate.
Will I need to wear compression garments after surgery?
Compression garments are an effective way to reduce bleeding and swelling during the healing period. It is important to follow all post-op instructions for a smooth and healthy outcome.
Are the results of my liposuction lifelong?
After the procedure, your new shape can be maintained as long as you do not gain weight. Fat cells that have been removed are not regrown. If you gain weight, the results will remain, but may be less sculpted.
What is a liposuction “cannula”?
It is a small stainless steel tube that is inserted through the skin to remove subcutaneous fat. Microcannulas can produce smoother final results.
Is abdominal liposuction the same as a “tummy tuck”?
No. A tummy tuck may include liposuction in its procedure but concentrates on tightening and removing sagging abdominal skin and repairing the muscles beneath. In some cases, depending upon the patient’s physical situation, liposuction may be recommended as part of a tummy tuck, or as a single procedure when fat deposits are the only problem to resolve.
How will my skin look after liposuction?
This depends upon your skin’s degree of elasticity. Scarring is very minimal due to the small incision sites.
