Implant Options Implant Placement Types of Incisions

Silicone Implants

Silicone implants come pre-filled with a unique silicone gel designed to replicate the natural feel of human fat, resulting in a texture that closely resembles natural breast tissue. Athēnix surgeons use FDA-approved Natrelle® and Sientra® implants, which offer many sizes and shapes and automatically enroll you in a free warranty program so you can feel reassured about the safety and durability of your implants.

Saline Implants

Saline breast implants are filled with sterile saltwater, offering a flexible and adjustable option for breast augmentation. They are filled during surgery, making size adjustments easier. In case of a rupture, the saline is absorbed harmlessly by the body. They are FDA-approved and suitable for women 18 years or older.

Over or Under the Muscle

Implant placement is an essential consideration in the breast augmentation process. The surgeon places them in a surgically created “pocket” beneath the muscles between your breast tissue and the chest wall or underneath the breast tissue above the muscle. Our surgeons will assess your goals and body type to determine the ideal technique.

Submuscular Placement

Submuscular implants are placed under the pectoral muscle, which protects the implant. If you have thin breast tissue, submuscular placement may be ideal. This placement tends to result in breast implants positioned higher than those placed over the muscle and may hold their position for years without fear of sagging or drooping.

Submammary Placement

With submammary or subglandular placement, the implants are placed above the muscle and behind the breast tissue. This technique typically involves smaller implants or no skin elasticity issue. Submammary placement tends to result in fewer instances of muscle movement affecting the implant's appearance.

Inframammary Incision

The inframammary technique is one of the most common and involves inserting the implant under the breast through the skin fold where the breast and chest connect. This results in no visible scarring while standing, as the breast tissue covers the incision.

Transaxillary Incision

The transaxillary method involves inserting implants through an incision in the upper breast, next to the fold of the armpit. The incision is almost invisible, even when the arm is raised.

Periareolar Incision

Periareolar is when the incisions are made around the areola, which results in a well hidden scar. This technique is used if the implants are placed over the chest muscle.

Natural Breast Augmentation Using Fat Transfer

If you are considering breast augmentation but are uncomfortable with the use of breast implants, natural breast augmentation is a great alternative.

  • Remove unwanted, stubborn fat from unflattering areas

Your Recovery Process

Immediately After Surgery

After your breast augmentation, you'll wear a special surgical bra to support and reduce swelling. 

That Day

Expect to be somewhat groggy as the anesthesia wears off. Light showering may be possible 48 hours after surgery.

Following Days

Take short walks to promote mobility, preventing blood clots and complications. Aim for getting up at least five times a day.

One Week Post-Op

The soft compression band can be removed. Most patients return to work, but physically demanding jobs may require additional recovery time.

Two Weeks

Bruising and swelling should subside, and over-the-counter pain relief can help. Patients get a good idea of their results by this point.

Six Weeks

Muscles in your upper body have had sufficient time to heal, allowing a gradual return to exercise. Avoid chest-related exercises like bench presses and push-ups.

Three Months

You'll see the final results of your breast augmentation, with swelling reduced, tissues healed, and scars fading.

Six Months

Your new breasts are fully settled at this point and have a natural, beautiful appearance.
