The breast implant procedure begins with a detailed consultation with your certified and experienced Orange County cosmetic surgeon wherein he gives you all the necessary details about the surgery. The meeting also usually involves an assessment of your natural breast tissue and a discussion on your specific surgery goals. The initial consultation is vital for selecting a specific variety of breast implants for your breast augmentation surgery in Orange County.
Our breast augmentation surgery at our Orange County office is usually performed on an outpatient basis and takes only about two hours to be completed. During the procedure, your surgeon will make an incision through your armpit, bellybutton, areola or the bottom of your breasts, depending on your specific case and personal comfort. This pocket may be created either below or above your pectoral muscle and is needed to facilitate the implant insertion. After the pocket is formed, your surgeon will place the implant inside and close the incisions with a medical tape or sutures.
At Athenix Body’s Orange County office, we offer two of the most popular types of breasts implants for breast augmentation surgeries: saline and silicone gel breast implants. Here is a quick overview of both implant varieties:
The saline breast implants are bags filled with disinfected salt water. This bag features a hard silicone shell which is inserted empty into the patient’s body. When the surgeon has placed the implant inside the pocket, he/she fills it with the saline solution up to a specific volume (customized for each patient).
The outer silicone shells in saline implants are available in different sizes. You and your surgeon need to select a shell by assessing the amount of increase desired in the natural breast size.
Some of the main advantages of saline implants include the following:
- They contain sterilized saline solution, which is also naturally found in the body. Hence there is no risk to your health even in case of leakage
- These implants are adjustable because the fluid volume can be decided/changed after the implant is placed (not pre-filled)
- They usually offer greater projection than silicone breast implants
- They are a bit less expensive than silicone implants
As compared to silicone implants, lesser number of people opt for saline implants today. This is because these implants may feel firmer and less like the natural breast tissue.
Silicone Gel Implants
Silicone gel implants are a very popular choice of implants among patients looking to undergo a breast augmentation surgery. Data suggests that more than 50 percent of the breast enhancement surgeries done in 2015 used silicone implants.
Silicone implants are approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and can be used for patients above 22 years of age. The reason why these implants are so popular among patients is that they resemble the natural tissue of the breasts very closely, both in feel and in appearance.
A key difference between saline and silicone gel implants is that the latter is prefilled and contains a jelly-like, soft substance or medical class silicone. This category of breast implant is especially recommended for patients with thin breast tissue (because there is greater risk of rippling). The silicone inside these implants is formulated to resemble body fat and is capable of retaining the natural temperature of the body.
One of the most notable advantages of silicone implants is that there is very little chance of rippling and you will unlikely see any ridges on your breast’s outer perimeter. This is because silicone is capable of retaining its shape even in the absence of outer shell support.
Selecting a Breast Implant
Both types of implants i.e. saline and silicone, have their own unique pros and cons. For instance, silicone breast implants are more natural in feeling, but saline breast implants are less expensive.
There are also some differences between the possible side effects associated with each implant. For instance, in case there is a rupture in the saline implant’s outer shell, the effect is quite predictable i.e. the saline will escape out of the implant and get naturally absorbed into the body without causing any harm. But if there is rupturing in the silicone implant, the effects are not immediately noticeable.
At Athenix Body in Orange County, we schedule a thorough initial consultation in with each patient before a breast enhancement surgery and help them make the right selection in breast implants.
