At Athenix, no two of our Los Angeles tummy tucks are the same. After an in-depth consultation and careful evaluation of your anatomy, our surgeon will tailor a surgical plan specifically for you. The type of tummy techniques used in your procedure will depend on the location and amount of loose, excess skin, the underlying anatomy in your abdominal region, and your aesthetic goals.
Traditional, or Full Tummy Tuck
This procedure, which uses a hip-to-hip incision, addresses the entire abdominal region. It may also involve an incision around the navel to remove excess skin in the upper abdomen and reposition the belly button. Our surgeons artfully and strategically place incisions so that surgical lines can be concealed by a bikini bottom or underwear.
Through these incisions, abdominal muscles are tightened with internal sutures, and excess skin and fat are removed. The remaining skin is pulled down tight over a flatter, firmer, abdomen, and the incisions are closed with sutures.
Extended Tummy Tuck
The extended tummy tuck addresses both the belly and love handles at the waist. It removes more loose skin from a wider area than the traditional tummy tuck. This procedure may be recommended for men and women who have lost significant amounts of weight.
It involves a horizontal incision extending around the hips to the sides of the lower back. Extended tummy tuck may also require a circular incision around the navel to reposition the belly button after excess skin is removed.
Circumferential Tummy Tuck
This technique is often used to tighten and contour the thighs, buttocks, and hips, after bariatric surgery. It is more extensive than a traditional tummy tuck. Your doctor may recommend a circumferential tummy tuck if you have lost massive amounts of weight and have loose, overhanging skin around your entire body.
The procedure involves an incision extending all around the waistline through which muscles are tightened, excess skin and fat are removed, and the buttocks and upper thighs are lifted. It may also involve a circular incision to recreate or reposition the navel.
Mini Tummy Tuck
This less invasive tummy tuck technique is used to address only the abdominal area below the navel. It requires a smaller incision, four to eight inches long, above the pubic region.
The mini tummy tuck does not remove excess skin in the upper abdomen or reposition the navel. It may be appropriate for removing loose skin and tightening abdominal muscles below the navel after pregnancy or weight loss.
Endoscopic Tummy Tuck
Performed with an endoscope (a lighted optical instrument) and with very small incisions, this surgical technique is used to treat weakened abdominal muscles. It does not remove excess fat or tighten loose, excess skin.
How Long Does a Tummy Tuck Procedure Take?
A mini tummy tuck takes approximately 90 minutes to perform. Depending on the surgical approach and extent of treatment, all other tummy tuck procedures take anywhere from two to five hours.
How Is a Tummy Tuck Performed?
Most tummy tucks are performed under general anesthesia, to ensure your comfort, and to ensure that the abdominal muscles are relaxed during the procedure. After anesthesia is administered, your surgeon will:
- Create the incisions
- Tighten abdominal muscles using internal sutures
- Remove excess skin and fat
- Reposition or recreate the navel
What Can I Expect after Tummy Tuck Surgery?
Arrange to have someone drive you home and assist you after a tummy tuck. You will need to take at least two weeks off work. To prepare for your recovery, stock up on nutritious foods and make sure you have whatever you need to rest comfortably.
Drink plenty of water and sleep with your head elevated for the first two weeks of your recovery. Take pain medications to control any discomfort, and apply topical products recommended by your doctor to promote healing and reduce visible scarring. You may be asked to wear compression garments while you are recovering after a tummy tuck.
