Incision Types

Options for incision placement and type include the following:

  • Crescent Lift: A crescent lift is a technique used to correct minimal sagging and involves making a small incision halfway around the top edge of the areola. It is typically reserved for when a breast lift procedure includes implants.
  • Donut (Peri-areolar) Lift: The Donut lift involves a circular incision around the areola and is often performed with implants. It corrects mild sagging and reduces the size of the areola.
  • Lollipop (Vertical) Lift: The lollipop breast lift involves two incisions in the shape of a lollipop, allowing the surgeon to remove excess skin and reshape the breast. The scars can be easily hidden.
  • Anchor (Inverted T) Lift: The Anchor lift is best for significant sagging and dramatic reshaping, allowing the surgeon to remove a substantial amount of skin and tissue. It involves two incisions in the shape of an anchor and may include a third incision to reduce the areola.

When to Consider a Breast Lift

Life factors that lead to sagging breasts include the following:

  • Gravity and time: The connective tissue in the breasts stretches out eventually, causing the breasts to sag and lose their shape or even appear deflated or flat.
  • Gaining and losing weight: With weight loss, breast fat is often the first to go. Substantial weight gain may have stretched both the skin and the muscle structure that supports their weight, leaving the breasts in a saggy, droopy condition.
  • Pregnancy and breast-feeding: During pregnancy, hormonal changes typically cause the breasts to grow larger and heavier. When a woman is breastfeeding, the breasts become engorged, changing in size and shape.
  • Heredity: If your breasts are naturally droopy because of genetic factors, a breast lift at our state-of-the-art facility can help you attain a more attractive profile with fuller, firmer breasts.

Breast lift recovery typically involves a few days of rest, during which patients are advised to avoid strenuous activity or heavy lifting. Pain and discomfort can be managed through medication, and patients usually must wear a supportive bra for several weeks after the procedure. Swelling and bruising are common, but these typically subside within a few weeks.

What is a breast lift?

A breast lift is a surgical procedure called a mastopexy. It is a combination of procedures to lift the breasts higher on the chest wall and reposition the nipple so it is in a natural, youthful position at the front of the breast.

How is a breast lift performed?

The type of procedure is based on the patient. The incision placement will be based on the degree of sagging that has occurred. The incisions are often placed around the nipple area, but in some cases of extreme sagging, there may be an incision from the center of the nipple to the bottom of the breast.

How much swelling will I have after a breast lift?

As with any invasive procedure, you can expect some swelling. Sleeping on extra pillows or a foam wedge will help limit swelling. Drink lots of water and avoid salty foods during healing. If you carefully follow all of our post-op procedures, you should heal quickly without much concern about excessive swelling.

How long will the results of a breast lift last?

While the results are long-lasting, over time, you may experience a greater amount of skin laxity. Caring for your skin correctly helps keep it firm and healthy. Typically, the results last many years before another procedure is needed, if at all.

Will my breasts be symmetrical after they are lifted?

The procedure is geared to produce symmetrical, round, plump (and natural-looking) breasts. Some slight variations in the structure of the chest wall, ribs, or spine may create minor imperfections in matched breasts.

Can a lift and an augmentation be performed in the same surgery?

Yes, and a breast augmentation and lift are often done at Athēnix. Our surgeon will discuss your options during your consultation.

Can I breastfeed after a breast lift?

Yes, although it is recommended to wait to have breast surgery until you are done having children because of the impact of pregnancy and breastfeeding on the shape and characteristics of the breast. If the nipple structure is left intact, breastfeeding is possible, but other variables may occur during the procedure that could affect breastfeeding.
